Why do solitary trees thrive on the precarious edge of a cliff? There seems to be no soil, the wind is relentless... no nearby colleagues to buffer against the elements. The solitary tree is at risk.
Perhaps it is because there are so few other trees there with which to compete for what meagre resources do exist. And once that foothold is established, nothing else can encroach. The solitary tree is at risk... but it also has the benefit of its own place.
